Saw The Weakerthans at 930. It was a pretty awesome concert once they started to kick into gear. Sadly, that really only happened with the last song of their regular set and during their encore. As good as the earlier stuff was, it was a little too much like listening to the album on my stereo. We got a nice little treat during the encore, while waiting to tune up in between songs there was a slightly whispered, garbled-word cover of The Cure’s Close to Me.
But what made this concert hilarious was that as we were walking out, I heard this:
“I enjoy farting in a crowd.”

A nice quick, little NYT blog posting about easy ways to go organic.

Someone on DCist commented that none of my top five DC restaurants are all that affordable. Actually, funnily enough, all of them except for Beck can be easily affordable if you know when to go or what to do. And these ways were pretty much the only way I have had the chance to enjoy them. The key is to know how and when to choose, I suppose. I will also add that service at a few of them when I’ve gone has been poor to middling. But it still hasn’t impacted my feelings about the food. I’ve eaten in a lot of places with poor service and good, cheap food, but feel they ranked pretty high.
Restaurant Eve – Perhaps I should specify that their $13.50 lunch in their bar is what is affordable. I have never eaten anywhere else, but that experience was enough for me to push them to the top of my list. Choose any two items from their lunch menu and only pay $13.50. I have probably paid more for a crappy sandwich.
Restaurant Kolumbia – $9 bar lunch. Closing. =( Nuff said.
Bob’s Shabu Shabu – If you go with friends you can walk out with about five or six courses (not shabu shabu though, which is admittedly average) for around $20/person. Ditto Bob’s Noodle. Where else could you get that many courses for that price? Or get a really good dish on rice for less than $10.
Comet Ping-Pong – Their basic cheese and tomato is $8, and amazing. Add one or two basic toppings and it ends up at $10. You’d easily pay as much for delivery pizza that can’t match it. Unless of course you choose the Domino’s 5-5-5 deal. Heh… but that’s another story.
Recs after the jump…

This beer has been in my fridge, and I have been loving it. I was talking to the beer guy at Rodman’s, and mentioned I didn’t really like overly hoppy beers. Then he was surprised when I decided to take the Bell’s Two Hearted Ale. It may be on the hoppier end, but ends up beautifully balanced. Come away with the scent of grapefruit and flowers that somehow just works without the weird hops and spice that their Oberon has. Blech. Seriously. Get this stuff. It is awesome.
If you happen to spot some Saranac Pomegranate Wheat, I also highly recommend it. I first had it up in Boston, and then it came in the Saranac Summer Pack (an AMAZING selection). Despite the “fruit,” the acidity of the pomegranate works well with the naturally sour flavor of this wheat ale, adding another slightly mysterious layer of flavor. It is so good that it just went from a seasonal to a year-round offering. From what I heard the distributor in this area is hesitant to put out some of these other beers from Saranac, but if you see it, tell me where to get it.
