Located above Makoto on MacArthur Blvd., Kotobuki has the feel of a local neighborhood sushi joint. At $1 for most pieces of sashimi with the exception of $2 items like toro. I’ve been there a couple of times, and I’ve grown to really like it. Seaweed salad is usually perfectly flavored with bits of hot red pepper.
The sea scallop was lovely and melty. The toro was pretty good, nice and fatty, although I usually don’t like tuna that much. Sea urchin is a whole other story. I don’t know if it was bad or… but it was rather stinky and foul. But perhaps most sea urchin is usually like that. Most rolls top out at about 3.20 for six pieces. There are some larger, more fish-intensive rolls at $7.
