Darfur rally

I went to the Save Darfur rally today. I’ve been really interested in the stiuation in Darfur since 2002. I read The Weekenders a realistic, but fictional account of the situation in Sudan. The writers of the book visited the region to learn more about the situation. It’s a good book if you ever get the chance to get your hands on it.

Anyway more info on the rally after the break…

Lavender shortbread

Lavender shortbread

From the lavender shortbread recipe I got from Meg of I Heart Bacon. It was hard to make them perfectly round, as you can see, but the lavender buds were nice. There were nice bits of sea salt that added a nice little savoryness to the flowery fragrance. I'd post the recipe, but I think that perhaps I will just direct you to I Heart Bacon and you can ask Meg yourself.

Placating the masses

The Republican proposal to give a $100 rebate to everyone for the high gas prices. Election year anyone? So I HATE this solution. It completely avoids the main issues like the necessity to investigate price gouging or to create alternative fuel sources. I am sure that people will be spending a lot more than an extra $100 on gas. I hate the fact that they are using this tax to avoid coming up with real solutions. One of the news shows mapped the inverse relationship between Bush's approval rating and gas prices. It was fairly accurate. Like they say, elections hinge on the economy.

In some ways, I am happy about high gas prices because it is sticking it to the folks that drive big SUVs (assholes in SUVs will a whole other rant) and other gas guzzlers, especially since I only drive my car about once a week. I am hoping the high prices will force people to reconsider their car purchases. At the same time, I hate the fact that this probably forces other people to choose between driving and eating.

“Mexican food” and Review: The Oceanaire

My good friend K. found this ad in the City Paper… “Sexy Mexican vixen seeking big strong man to stuff my taco with his meat.” How funny would it be if that was a literal ad… All I wanted was someone to help stuff tacos!

Today we had a departmental lunch for no particular reason, except maybe to reward everyone for dealing with some of the busyness that we’ve been going through in the last month. Continue reading

Review: Rockland’s BBQ

The sister, bro-in-law and monkeykins came down to visit after furniture shopping. We were going to head to 2 Amy's, but after my confusion with getting lost, we ended up in Glover Park. So I suggested Rockland's because I'd never been, and the smoky scent of BBQ was just too tempting. Continue reading
